The Archdiocese of Madurai:
The Archdiocese of Madurai covers up the territorial boundaries of four revenue districts of Tamil Nadu namely Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar and Dindigul. The total population in this area is 3, 36,726 of which the catholic population is 1, 15,166. Nearly 50% of this catholic population is socially marginalized, economically poor and a little educated. Many parishes are located in remote rural areas serving these most deserving people in faith and justice. The archdiocese, in view of leading the Catholics towards a better spiritual and social life, has been divided into seven vicariates with 69 parishes. To initiate and impart the faithful towards the values of Christ this diocese has 14 commissions, considered to be the vital bodies. Youth commission is one of the vibrant bodies taking special care and attention on the youth, the pillars of the future society and church.
The Youth Commission:
The youth commission in Madurai archdiocese was formed in 1986 to take care of the social, psychological and pastoral needs of the catholic youth in the archdiocese as per the directions of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI). Ever since the emergence of this commission, it has been committing itself for the holistic formation of youth.
The main thrusts of the Youth Commission are as follows:
- Building up youth groups for boys and girls in villages and schools
- Training the youth in spiritual and psychological aspects to make them fit to face the world of tomorrow and stand by the Christian values
- Creating awareness on socio-economic and politico-cultural situations in India to develop skills, analytical bent of mind
- Organizing youth movements to mobilize their resources and to assert their rights to make their own decisions in life
- Developing leadership qualities to become democratic and charismatic leaders in future
- Skill development programmes to get employed in various sectors
- Making them the agents of social change and help them to move towards a just and equitable social order
- Providing work oriented innovative training for promotion of self-reliance through income generation for the youth.
- To break the vicious circle of poverty to empower the rural youth especially girls and children through education, motivation and mobilization
தமிழக கத்தோலிக்க இளைஞர் இயக்கம்
1985 ஆம் ஆண்டு மறைந்த திருத்தந்தை இரண்டாம் அருள் சின்னப்பர் முதல் அகில உலக இளைஞர் மாநாட்டை அறிவித்தார். தமிழகத்திலும் அப்பொழுதுதான் தமிழக கத்தோலிக்க இளைஞர் இயக்கம் எனும் ஒரே பதாகையின் கீழ் இளைஞர்களை ஒன்று சேர்க்கும் பணி ஆரம்பமானது. இவ்வாறு தமிழகத்தின் பதினேழு மறைமாவட்டங்களிலும் இவ்வியக்கமனது தொடங்கப்பட்டு இருபத்தைந்து ஆண்டுகளாக செயல்பட்டுவருகிறது.
